The Headline Isn’t the Whole Story
Every few months, another headline claims researchers found microplastics somewhere they were never supposed to be. First it was bottled water. Then human placentas. Then the brain. Now researchers say they found them in the blood of people having heart attacks. That’s a headline that deserves more than a quick share on social media, because it’s also one that’s easy to misunderstand.
After reading the paper, the takeaway was much more nuanced than the coverage suggested. The study found a strong association between microplastics and patients experiencing severe heart attacks. It did not prove those particles caused the heart attacks. That difference isn’t technical. It’s one of the most important distinctions in scientific research, and it’s the part that often gets lost once a study leaves the journal and becomes a headline.
What the Researchers Actually Found
The study, led by Dr. Raffaele Marfella at the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli in Naples and published in the European Heart Journal, looked at 61 patients in Italy. Instead of taking a standard blood sample from the arm, researchers collected blood directly from the coronary arteries and tested it for microscopic plastic particles.
Microplastics or even smaller particles called nanoplastics were detected in 84 percent of patients experiencing an acute heart attack. By comparison, researchers found them in 40 percent of patients with chronic coronary artery disease and 32 percent of patients whose arteries appeared normal.
The plastic detected most often was polyethylene, the material commonly used in grocery bags, food packaging, and many disposable plastic products. While polyethylene was the most common plastic found in this study, it isn’t the only source researchers worry about. Synthetic clothing sheds microscopic plastic fibers every time it’s washed, making fashion part of a much bigger conversation about where these particles are coming from.
Those numbers are difficult to ignore, but they don’t answer the question everyone wants answered. Finding more plastic particles in the blood of heart attack patients is not the same as proving those particles triggered the heart attack. This was an observational study, meaning researchers measured what was already present in the patients they examined. Observational studies are incredibly useful because they reveal patterns worth investigating. They’re not designed to prove cause and effect.
But step back from the causation question for a second, because there’s a simpler point buried underneath it. A few years ago, finding plastic particles in human blood at all would have been the headline. Now it’s showing up in coronary arteries, carotid plaques, placentas, brain tissue. However you slice the causation question, plastic accumulating inside a human body isn’t something to shrug off.
The Biggest Question is Still Unanswered
One detail that received far less attention than the headline was what else the researchers found. Patients with higher exposure to air pollution and people who smoked were also more likely to have detectable plastics in their blood. Those are already well-established risk factors for cardiovascular disease, which immediately complicates the story.
That leaves researchers with several possibilities. Microplastics could be contributing to heart disease. They could be entering the body alongside other pollutants that are doing most of the damage. They could also be acting as markers of long-term environmental exposure rather than being the direct cause themselves. At this point, the study can’t distinguish between those explanations, and the researchers don’t claim that it can.
That’s why I get skeptical when the conversation jumps from “scientists found an association” to “scientists proved plastics cause heart attacks.” The study simply doesn’t say that. Overselling research might generate clicks, but it doesn’t help people understand what the science actually shows.

This Fits a Much Bigger Pattern
Even with those limitations, I don’t think this is a study that should be brushed aside. One paper rarely changes scientific understanding on its own. What matters is whether similar findings continue appearing across different studies, different research teams, and different populations.
That’s what makes this latest paper stand out.
In 2024, researchers publishing in The New England Journal of Medicine examined plaque removed from patients’ carotid arteries, the major blood vessels that carry blood to the brain. They detected microplastics or nanoplastics in more than half of the plaque samples they tested. Patients whose plaque contained those particles were significantly more likely to experience a heart attack, stroke, or die during the following three years than patients whose plaque did not contain detectable plastics.
That study also couldn’t prove causation. Neither can this one. But when separate studies begin pointing toward similar patterns, it becomes harder to dismiss the findings as isolated observations.
Researchers are also investigating how microplastics interact with the immune system. One of the leading questions is whether these particles contribute to chronic inflammation, which is the body’s long-term immune response. Unlike the short-term inflammation that helps heal an injury, chronic inflammation can damage blood vessels over time and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Scientists are still trying to determine whether microplastics play a meaningful role in that process, but it’s one of the primary reasons this research is receiving so much attention.
On its own, this latest study wouldn’t convince me of much. What made me pay attention was that it isn’t the first time researchers have found microplastics in the cardiovascular system. The 2024 New England Journal of Medicine study reached a similarly unsettling conclusion. Different patients, different methods, but another sign that these particles aren’t just passing through the body unnoticed.
Why Fashion Belongs in This Conversation
One thing that consistently gets overlooked is where these particles come from in the first place. Water bottles usually dominate the conversation, but they’re only one piece of it. Microplastics are released from tire wear, food packaging, household dust, cosmetics, and synthetic textiles. Polyester, nylon, acrylic, and elastane are all plastic-based fibers. Every time those fabrics are washed, tiny plastic fibers can break away and enter wastewater systems. Treatment plants capture many of them, but not all.
That doesn’t mean wearing a polyester shirt is going to cause heart disease. That’s far beyond what the research says. What it does mean is that fashion deserves a place in this conversation. As ultra-fast fashion has flooded the market with inexpensive synthetic clothing designed to be replaced quickly, it has also increased the amount of plastic entering our homes, waterways, and eventually the environment researchers are now studying.
It’s another reminder that fashion isn’t separate from environmental health. It’s one of the industries helping shape it.
What I’m Taking Away From This Research
The biggest takeaway isn’t that plastic has suddenly become more dangerous. It’s that researchers are asking better questions than they were a few years ago. Instead of asking whether microplastics exist in the environment, they’re asking what happens after those particles enter the human body, where they travel, how long they stay there, and whether they affect long-term health.
Those questions still don’t have complete answers, but waiting until every mechanism is understood before paying attention doesn’t make much sense either.
The changes worth making are the practical ones. Microwave food in glass or ceramic instead of plastic whenever possible. Replace scratched plastic food containers with glass as they wear out instead of buying new plastic ones. Pay attention to clothing labels and choose natural fibers like cotton, linen, hemp, or wool more often when they make sense. None of those steps eliminate microplastic exposure, but they can reduce some of the everyday sources that are within our control.
This latest study doesn’t prove plastic causes heart attacks. What it does show is that researchers continue finding microplastics in places they were never expected to be. That’s reason enough to keep paying attention, even if the science is still catching up to the questions.
